Past Tense

I've been experimenting with some different ways of telling stories lately. This is one of those experiments. Please do comment if you've got any insights to offer. I hope you enjoy it!

Bartleby pushed open the heavy pub door. A bell jangled and a handful of pub patrons gave him a quick look-see. Realizing that they had no idea who this new arrival was, they quickly returned to their pints and banter. Bartleby, however, looked around more intently, until he saw the person he was looking for. He took off his hat and walked towards one of many tables.

"Good evening, John, glad you could make it." He said, while taking off his heavy coat. The man sitting at the table smiled and raised his glass to Bartleby.
"Anything for a friend. Please, sit down."

Found in Space

Originally for Boing Boing's link "Found in Space" microfiction dealio, which I didn't win link.

I expected many things when I was chosen as the first human being to experience FTL travel. Hardships, things going wrong. Hell, I even expected to die. What I hadn't expected was this. None of the 'scientists' who had instructed me and had tried to explain what an FTL drive actually does had seemingly known this was a possibility. Yet here I was. And so was I. Staring at one another.

“So, you broke through the dimensional rift in that thing?” I said.
“I guess I did.” I said to myself, glancing sideways to the smoldering FTL drive.

Woodworcks is back

With a spiffy new design. Which, admittedly, was not one of the reasons I took a break, but as Robin, I can't let any changes to the site go without a redesign. Seriously, I'm notorious for redesigning often.

The new setup is quite straightforward, but I'll give you a quick rundown nonetheless.

Update Pause

It's not that I don't have the time or material itself to post, but I've been considering what to do with woodworcks and it needs a bit more. Recently I did a microfiction 'story' ('Found in Space' link) which I couldn't add to woodworcks because it didn't feel right.

As it turns out, the blog format doesn't really allow for both diversity and easy readability.

I'll be working on redesigning (but mostly re-thinking) woodworcks so that it can house most of my creative work, rather than just certain stories.

This means, by the way, that I am pleased with woodworcks and want to expand it. That's good news!

Coffee

"Oh my..." Jerry said softly, with a cooing quality embedded deeply in his voice, showing approval. He held the cup with both hands and with loving care sniffed the fumes coming from it. "Oh... my..." he repeated after a meaningful and well-practiced pause.

You see, Jerry loves coffee. And not in the general sense. One could quite factually state that Jerry's interest in coffee borders on an obsession. A very persistent one at that, as he's been a coffee aficionado for far too many of his years.

Smoke Break

Nick put down his pen and put his face into his hands, groaning softly. "Fucking deadlines..." he thought to himself and sighed. He looked at the clock and got up. He slammed the binder shut. Dennis looked up. Their desks were opposite of each other. Nick walked over to the couch and dropped down onto it.

The office space the two men shared was tiny. Tiny and grossly overpriced. But they were a fresh start-up and had little choice given their chosen location and budget. Two desks, crappy office chairs, one table with a coffee maker and assorted materials and a couch. That was all they had, and it drove Nick insane. '10-hour work days in a fucking closet' was how he referred to it to anyone who'd listen to him.

Welcome to Woodworcks!

Woodworcks is nothing special, just a little place where I hope my stories and other pieces of fiction can find a home. Not all of it will be as good as the other, and the themes will vary greatly, as my interests do as well. The intent is to post a story once every week, with some longer stories in multiple parts to keep the buffer comfortable (the buffer of written material is currently around 30 stories, so I think it's going to be just fine). Aiming at 1500 words a week maximum. The category links to the right will help you find all the stories (or parts thereof) you might be looking for, but there's also the story archive link link, which is probably even easier.

Why post most of my material online? Simple. The buyers ain't buyin' and I'm sick of just sitting on this material. I want to get it out there, have it entertain people and get some feedback in return. I want to get better as a writer and I see only one way forward - not keeping it to myself any longer.

If you like what you're reading, bookmark, follow the RSS link, follow me on twitter link or whatever. Comment and let me know what you think - feedback is very important to a writer, because if I have no clue as to what I'm doing wrong (or right), I can't fix it (or do it more often!).

Thanks in advance for reading my work, I appreciate it, but do let me know so I know who to appreciate!
